Overview

*this is not an official race*

Gap to Grove 2021 is a 4 hour and a 12 hour navigation challenge in and around Black Mountain, NC. Registration will launch on Friday, June 11th and entries will be extremely limited.

30 spaces will be available in the 4 hour challenge, and only 20 for the 12 hour.

Schedule

Participants will receive their maps and instructions prior to the challenge date. On challenge day, September 4, the schedule will be:

  • 7:00am-8:00am- 12 hour challenge start (staggered to reduce following)
  • 9:00am-10:00am- 4 hour challenge start (staggered to reduce following)
  • 2:00pm- 4 hour cutoff, awards presentation
  • 8:00pm- 12 hour cutoff, awards presentation

Navigation

You will receive a waterproof orienteering style map of the greater Swannanoa Valley area that shows a starting area at Mountain Running Company along with checkpoints throughout the valley. Some G2G checkpoints are located on mountain trails and some are located within town limits. The 4 hour challenge stays within the immediate Black Mountain area.

The goal is to get to every checkpoint and to the finish as quickly as possible. The checkpoints can be visited in any order. If you make wise choices, your route could be 32-34 (or 12-14) miles even if you stay on trail/road the entire time. Make a bad choice? Who knows? Maybe there will be an award for the biggest mistake.

Scoring and Results

How does the timing work? We will be using a smartphone app (we will post instructions about how to download and use this app) that’s been programmed with the checkpoints. Live results will be kept up in real-time throughout the challenge timeframes. More to come, but you need a smartphone and a way to keep it going the whole time, at least 12 hours (or 4).

Swag and Awards

Swag: everybody is going to get an awesome buff (neck gaiter, whatever) with the G2G logo when they register. Sub-12 hour finishers of the challenge will receive an awesome technical running hat from BOCOgear. Top 3 male/female times for the year will get something awesome to be disclosed soon.

Refunds

If, for whatever reason, you enter and then need to back out, you can contact us for a refund. There will be no refunds issued after July 31st.

Waiver of Liability – initial required at registration to indicate that you have read and agree to these terms.
